Troubleshooting Knowledge Base

Common questions, fast answers.

Field-tested troubleshooting steps written by QC support engineers — calibration, batteries, alerts and connectivity for every platform.

A discrepancy does not necessarily indicate a sensor fault. Evaluate the following:
  1. Confirm both instruments were measured at the same location and time. Even 30 cm of distance can produce measurable differences near HVAC zones.
  2. Check calibration certificate expiration under Metrology > Measurement Chains > [sensor] > Calibration.
  3. Verify the reference thermometer's own calibration status and NIST traceability chain.
  4. Review the sensor's accuracy specification for the measurement range.
If recalibration is needed, submit a request through MySirius > Service > Calibration Request. All calibrations are performed to NIST-traceable standards.
Temperature excursions during door openings are expected physical events, not sensor errors:
  1. Configure alert delay settings to filter brief door-opening excursions (typically 5–15 minutes depending on unit recovery time).
  2. LoRa SPY T1 advantage: the T1 includes an integrated light detector that records door openings. Use this data for automatic correlation with temperature spikes in MySirius.
  3. Review your SOP for acceptable temperature excursion duration during routine access.
Qualified Controls recommends annual NIST-traceable calibration for all sensor platforms as a minimum baseline. Your facility's quality system may require more frequent calibration based on risk assessment, regulatory requirements, or historical drift data.

Digital probes simplify metrological services: calibration is performed in lab by simple probe exchange — no monitoring interruption.

Schedule calibrations through MySirius > Service > Calibration Request to maintain uninterrupted monitoring with loaner sensors during the calibration window.
All LoRa SPY variants use the same battery replacement procedure:
  1. Open the battery cover using a flat object (e.g., a coin) by rotating to align marks. "0" = Open, "1" = Closed.
  2. Insert the new battery respecting polarity markings. The green LED illuminates briefly to confirm.
  3. Close the cover and restart the device by touching the button for 3 seconds.
  4. Log the replacement in MySirius > Devices > Maintenance Log.
Required battery: 3.6 V lithium AA (Saft LS14500). Use only QC-supplied batteries (P/N 11596) for guaranteed compatibility.
Battery life varies by model, reporting interval and operating temperature.
  • LoRa SPY (all variants): 3.6 V lithium AA — ≈ 2 years.
  • LoRa TEMP standard: 3.6 V lithium A-type 14 mm — ≈ 5 years*
  • LoRa TEMP long-life option: 3.6 V lithium A-type 17 mm — ≈ 8 years*
  • Nano SPY: CR2477 3 V coin cell — 12–18 months at 15-minute interval.
*LoRa TEMP battery life is specified for a 6-hour transmission interval in SF8 mode.
Missing threshold alerts represent a critical compliance risk. Investigate immediately:
  1. Navigate to MySirius > Alerts > Alert Configuration and confirm thresholds are set for the affected sensor and zone.
  2. Verify notification recipients are correctly listed with valid email and phone numbers.
  3. Check the Alert History log to determine if the alert was generated but delivery failed.
  4. Confirm the alert delay setting is not masking brief excursions.
Document the investigation per your deviation management SOP. Alert delivery failures should be treated as potential data integrity events under 21 CFR Part 11.
Excessive false alerts create alert fatigue and increase the risk of genuine excursions being ignored. Review threshold margins (don't set thresholds too close to normal operating range), increase alert delays for non-critical zones, and evaluate sensor placement for sources of environmental noise. Any threshold adjustments must be documented and approved through your facility's change control process per GxP requirements.
All LoRa SPY variants share the same 87 × 64 × 25 mm polycarbonate housing, touch-sensitive button, LCD display and 3.6 V lithium AA battery. Identify yours by the colored ID ring:
  • T0 — Internal PT100 ambient (no ring)
  • T1 — Temperature + light sensor — Grey ring
  • T2 / T2 Incubator — External probe — Blue/Green or Yellow
  • T3 — Ultra-low temperature — Red ring
  • T4 — Pipe surface — Black ring
  • TH — Temperature + humidity (no ring)
  • Digital / U — Digital probe / Universal — Blue ring
See the LoRa SPY Hardware User Guide for full ranges and accuracy.
Proper sensor placement is critical for accurate data and reliable wireless communication. Mount LoRa SPY vertically (never horizontally — this degrades the antenna). Mount at a height representative of the monitored product zone (typically 1.0–1.5 m). Maintain 15 cm clearance from walls and ceilings. Position away from direct HVAC airflow, supply vents, heat-generating equipment and direct sunlight. Document placement as part of your facility's qualification records.
If the dashboard shows stale data, hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) to clear cached content. Check the System Status banner for active platform maintenance. Verify individual sensor status in Devices > All Devices. Try a different browser or incognito/private mode to rule out extensions. Data collection is independent of dashboard rendering — even if the display is delayed, sensor data is being captured and stored. Contact support if the issue persists beyond 30 minutes.
